Our Focus

Agriculture Technology :  The plant science industry is research and development-intensive industry. It ranks among the top four global industries in terms of percentage of sales invested in research and development. Modern agri-technologies such as plant breeding and biotech innovations are new forms of application of science and technology in agriculture. The GM and non-GM traits that are developed using modern science are far more precise and selective in producing desired agronomic traits than cross breeding. For thousands of years, farmers have been using selection techniques to improve quality and yield of crops. Plant biotechnology has improved farming techniques and crop production around the world by increasing plants resistance to diseases and pests; reducing pesticide application and improving crop yields. Agricultural technology development is to be encouraged and research work is to be enhanced in India. We support the investments in this long gestation projects that will address emerging problems of farmers in India and will help the country in achieving self-sufficiency in all crops and in optimising the use of resources. We look for ways and means of encouraging alliances and partnerships within India and with other countries organizations if they can benefit the Indian farmer through the development and introduction of modern science and technology.

Regulatory Affairs :  The biotech sector is one of the most comprehensively regulated industries in the world. Biotech products, both GM and non-GM, have to meet an exhaustive series of regulatory requirements to ensure environmental and human safety before they are released onto the market. Science-based regulation is the most effective way to ensure that farmers have the choice of the best available technologies to help them meet their own agricultural needs in a sustainable way. Alliance for Agri Innovation works with various institutions and governments to ensure the introduction of transparent and predictable regulatory environment that promotes sound science and risk assessments that are harmonized. Regulatory system needs to build public confidence in the technological solutions to the issues of food and agriculture and AAI will work with the regulatory bodies and governments in bringing this to the fore.

Intellectual Property :  Agricultural innovation plays a key role in driving long-term agricultural productivity, rural development and environmental sustainability by encouraging innovation and the creation of new solutions. Intellectual property protection is necessary to encourage continued investment in research and development and to ensure the plant science industry maintains its strong innovative base. Focus on innovations in agriculture as the challenge to feed 1.3 billion people cannot be met without innovations along the agri-value chain. However, if the organizations do not have the ability to protect the products of their research investments then the incentive for investment is damaged. AAI will work to prevent such situations through its policy advocacy work and will strive to provide a predictable protection to the IP that is generated through innovations that benefit the Indian farmer.
